Mythology – Symbols of Athena

by Erin on April 17, 2012

The attributes of grey-eyed Athena are relatively easy to recognize. Since she is a goddess of war, she often appears clad in armor and holding a weapon, typically a spear. In addition to this garb, she is often depicted with what is called an aegis.

Aegis - The aegis was a breastplate or shield made of goatskin.

Olive - The story of the contest in Athens illustrates the legendary connection between the goddess Athena and the olive.

Owl -

Spear - As I already noted, Athena often appears in art and literature wielding a weapon. The spear seems to be a weapon of choice for this goddess.
