Mythology - The City of Ys

Ys is the name of a mythical city in Celtic legend. Indeed, Ys, or Is as it is sometimes spelled, originated in Breton myth specifically.

My introduction to the legendary lost city came from a book. Or rather a novel, to be precise. Possession by A. S. Byatt. It was in the context of a discussion between two scholars about

Here’s the relevant passage:

“It’s a Breton legend. It was drowned in the sea for its wickedness. It was ruled by Queen Dahud, the sorceress, daughter of King Gradlond. The women there were transparent, according to some versions.”

Ever since I read this terse and tantalizing description in Possession, my interest in the topic has been piqued.

As an aside, apparently there is a series of Japanese video games that go by the name Ys.
